International Young Women's Composition Competition
The Musical Offering Evanston’s Community Music School is looking for women all over the world to compose a piece for the International Young Women’s Composition Competition (IYWCC) Submissions are due on September 30th, 2024.

This year The Musical Offering is excited to partner with our friends at The EcoVoice Project. The EcoVoice Project uses music and interdisciplinary collaboration to inform, connect, and inspire people to act for environmentally just causes.

2nd International Virtual Climate Change Education Summit (IVCCES) 2024
EcoVP Director and Founder, Dr. Kirsten Hedegaard will be presenting at the 2nd International Virtual Climate Change Education Summit. This educational summit shall be held on the 24th to 25th October, 2024 at the Zenith Bank ICT Centre, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria. This event is part of our celebration of the United Nations World Habitat Day & World Cities Day which are usually celebrated in the month of October annually.
Benjy Poetry And Music Global Concepts in collaboration with the Faculty, Rutgers School of Public Health,USA & University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria shall be hosting a two day educational event- 2nd International Virtual Climate Change Education Summit (IVCCES) 2024. This educational summit shall be held on the 24th to 25th October,2024 at the Zenith Bank ICT Centre, University of Nigeria,Nsukka, Nigeria. This event is part of our celebration of the United Nations World Habitat Day & World Cities Day which are usually celebrated in the month of October annually. Our 2nd International Virtual Climate Change Education Summit (IVCCES) 2024 will bring researchers, artists, students, government officials and professionals passionate about solving the climate challenges from all across the world for a two day unforgettable event. This event shall feature seminar presentations, networking sessions, research collaborations, workshops, poetry recitations, health talks and award presentations. Communicating Climate Hope
This August, EcoVP Director, Dr. Kirsten Hedegaard will moderate a panel and present on The EcoVoice Project at the Communicating Climate Hope Conference. Co-hosted by the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) and Tilburg University (The Netherlands), this interdiscplinary conference will bring together scholars, artists, and climate activists to explore innovative methods of engaging with climate change.
ACDA International Symposium on Research in Choral Singing
The American Choral Directors Association’s fourth annual International Symposium on Research in Choral Singing will combine diverse presentational formats and break-out sessions with opportunities for in-depth conversation, inquiry, and consideration of future research directions of all types. This year, The EcoVP’s Artistic Director, Dr. Kirsten Hedegaard, will be presenting her research, “Recent Trends in Eco-choral Repertoire”. National Collegiate Choral Organization Conference
The 10th Biennial NCCO Conference hosted by Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia will provide opportunities for professional development and rejuvenated connections with peers. This year, EcoVoice Founder Dr. Kirsten Hedegaard will be speaking on “Singing for a Sustainable Future: How the Choral Arts Can Help Address the Climate Crisis”. This talk will explore trends in eco-choral repertoire, including large-scale works and smaller octavos, as well as ideas for creative collaborations at the collegiate level. Additionally, resources for eco-arts research, sustainable practices, and eco-music organizations will be shared.
Chorus America Conference
As part of the Chorus America Conference, EcoVoice co-founder Kirsten Hedegaard will be moderating the “For the Good of the Earth: Choral Music and Eco-Activism” panel. She will be joined by Dwight Bigler, Shawn Kirchner, Robert Kyr, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate. This discussion will explore how composers are engaging with this issue in a variety of ways and how choral music provides a unique opportunity to grapple with the climate crisis. Join this panel of composers for a conversation on socially conscious repertoire that focuses on environmentalism and the growing anxiety regarding climate change.

Earth Day Song Gathering 2023
Students from University Illinois Chicago and Loyola University Chicago performed various songs to celebrate the Earth and inspire climate activism, including new repertoire by Shawn Kirchner and Luke Wallace. Guest speakers Rachel Leamon, Thomas Aláan, and Vivian Cossey spoke about a variety of topics regarding the climate crisis.
Although this event was originally planned to be at the Madonna della Strada Chapel garden, mother nature relocated us to the Mullady Theatre.

NCCO Article: Environmental Activism through Choral Music
Published in Vol. 60-1 of the National Collegiate Choral Organization’s Choir Scholar and American Choral Review, Dr. Kirsten Hedegaard’s “Environmental Activism through Choral Music: John Luther Adams’s Canticles of the Holy Wind” analyzes the work of John Luther Adams and music’s ability to address social issues. The paper explores the choral works of John Luther Adams and provides a detailed analysis of his Canticles of the Holy Wind.

The Intersection of Fine Arts and Climate Activism

Birds, Bees, and Butterflies at Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum
Loyola’s Ignatian Voices are joined by members of the New Earth Ensemble to perform choral works celebrating birds, bees, and butterflies. The performance travels throughout the museum and features Blackbird by Lennon and McCartney, Bumblebee by Anders Edenroth, and Butterfly by Mia Marakoff, with accompanying conservation action items provided by museum scientists.
2023 Loyola University Chicago Climate Change Conference
Loyola University Chicago’s 2023 annual Climate Change Conference centered around the topic of climate refugees. The key note speaker was filmmaker, writer and producer of the award-winning film Climate Refugees, Michael Nash. Panelists included Shelly Culbertson, Yves Umuhoza, and Fr. Tom Smolich, SJ.
The University Chorale opened the conference with a performance of “Courage to Care” by Shawn Kirchner, a new work that was written for the EcoVoice Project and premiered at the 2022 American Geophysical Union Meeting in December.
